Owners choose name for New Leeds Casino, Victoria Gate

For gambling enthusiasts, the city of Leeds in Yorkshire County, England is about to get a whole lot more popular with the locals and tourists alike. A new casino project has been underway for quite some time now, and the owners have been especially busy lately, working to hire more than 200 employees for the upcoming facility, as well as giving the ‘super casino‘ an official name.

The long awaited search for a title is over. It was announced this week, when the Leeds casino opens later this year, it will be formally dubbed Victoria Gate Casino.

Global Gaming Ventures, owner of the new development, said that they’ve already filled the first wave of the more than 200 employment roles at the casino. Many positions are still open for anyone interested in applying.

Once completed, the super casino – the third gaming facility in England large enough to gain such a prestigious title, and the first in the northern region of the country – will feature 50,000 square feet of casino gaming and entertainment space. With a 1,400 visitor capacity, Victoria Gate Casino is destined to become one of Leeds biggest entertainment venues.

The new Leeds casino is also hyped as being the upcoming home of one of the largest poker rooms in the UK. Other gambling options will include 140 slot machines, 80 electronic table games and 24 live dealer tables. The walls will be coated with large-screen TVs throughout for viewing sporting events. A restaurant, two bars and meeting space round out the destination’s other amenities.

“This is a unique venue on a grand scale unlike anything seen before in the north of England and we are delighted to be unveiling our name, our look and our first employees,” said Global Gaming Ventures CEO, Andrew Herd.

“Although this is a venue in the heart of Leeds, staffed by people from the city, our customers will not just be Leeds-based,” Herd continued. “Evidence shows us that a venue like a super casino attracts visitors from the region and beyond, bringing investment into the area.”

Robin Dobson is the Director of Retail Development for Hammerson, the company heading up the Leeds casino project, and she predicts the new casino and entertainment complex will hold it’s grand opening before the year is out.

“The Victoria Gate Casino is set to provide a valuable boost for the local economy with the creation of more than 200 jobs, something that the Victoria Gate team is passionate about,” said Dobson. “We are looking forward to welcoming the casino later this year.”

Leeds City Council struck a munificent bargain with Global Gaming Venues when approving the development project within the community. The group agreed to pay a £1 million fee upfront, which the council will disperse among various local charities. Then, with each year the Leeds casino is in operation, the company will pay an additional £450,000 to the council to provide resources for the prevention and treatment of gambling addiction and anti-poverty projects throughout the area.
